Luggage and Bag Locks

Luggage Info

Luggage, quite the point of contention in 2011. As of April 2011, IATA have thrown out the old rule book and now the 2 piece system for travel via the Americas is no longer a mandatory requirement. Airlines can now only give 1 piece of luggage for free and can charge for additional items. Many airlines are still giving additional pieces of luggage for skiing and other sporting equipment, consult the relevant airline website for further conditions. As of late 2011 these airfares offer the following luggage inclusions for economy...

SWISS RTW: 1 piece @ 23kg

Lufthansa RTW: 1 piece @ 23kg

Star Alliance RTW: 1 piece @ 20kg min, many carriers offer 23kg

Qantas Basic RTW: 2 pieces @ 23kg

Oneworld RTW: 2 pieces @ 23kg

Additional baggage allowances apply for high tier frequent flyer members and many airlines will have relatively well priced fees for additional pieces. Check the airline websites for the latest rules as these could change at any time.

In terms of your type of luggage we tend to favor the soft bags over the hard cases but each to their own. Some of the best labels include Paklite, Samsonite, Antler and Caribee. Invest in quality baggage and you will find that the life of the suitcase or backpack is a lot longer. If you are a backpacker we suggest you buy from a reputable retailer who will fit your backpack for you. Also, a good pair or walking shoes is essential for most travelers.
